Alan back in work after 12 years

Updated: May 6, 2019

A South Ayrshire man is back in work for the first time in 12 years after support from our employment experts.

Alan signed up to the Fair Start Scotland service as he was keen to work following a string of illnesses and conditions had hampered his career.

After such a long time away from the labour market and with very basic computer skills, Alan’s confidence was low and needed support to apply for jobs online. He believed his age and lack of experience would work against him.

But his outlook changed after being supported by our South Ayrshire team, especially Personal Adviser Julie Hair.

Julie encouraged Alan to think about what jobs he could do, rather than jobs he couldn’t. He was supported to look for jobs and received help to update his CV and covering letters, which were tailored to each opportunity that became available. He also undertook interview training to prepare himself for when the inevitable interviews started to come.

It wasn’t long before he was invited for an interview and after impressing the managers, he was offered the job. He is now working full-time as a courier and is happier and more confident. He now hopes to stay in the job until he retires.
