Leslie changes a bad experience into a great new job

Leslie, moved from job to job after a serious injury but he couldn’t find a role that suited his needs.

Why did Leslie join Fair Start Scotland?

Leslie worked for his family business but after undergoing two brain operations he’s been unable to maintain a steady job since 2017. As a result, from his operations he now suffers with very short-term memory loss. He’s unable to do any work that involves heavy lifting or driving.

After his operations, Leslie worked in a retail shop but was treated unfairly due to the scarring after his operations. Due to this he ended up leaving his job and decided to work in the hospitality sector in a restaurant. Again, he was faced with a similar experience and this made him feel insecure and depressed.

How did Fair Start Scotland help?

Leslie was introduced to Gayle, Personal Adviser, from Ayr and together they created an action plan. Due to lack of IT access at home and no appropriate outlets in the area, Leslie was struggling to do any form of jobsearch. Gayle helped him by producing a tailored CV and had one to one support to help him with his online applications.

With his new CV, Leslie started to get interviews, but he wasn’t getting the job offers which of course knocked his confidence. To help him he went attended our Confidence Building and Interview Skills workshops giving him the skills to help him better prepare for interviews.

Getting the job

Leslie was soon successful in securing a job with Home Bargains that was due to open in Heathfield. Leslie will be able to work part-time hours in a permanent contract and take on more responsibilities if he feels fit enough to do so.
