“I am enjoying the job at McDonald’s. The managers at McDonalds are supportive and it is a great company to work for. I cannot thank the team at StartScotland enough for what they have done for me” – Ruairidh, Fair Start Scotland participant

Why did you join Fair Start Scotland? Ruairidh had been out of work since 2016, after a stint working in a leading supermarket during their festive period. He struggled to find work due to having Asperger’s, he was applying for jobs but wasn’t hearing anything back from companies so he decided to come to us so that we could support him back to work. How Fair Start Scotland helped Having Asperger’s, Ruairidh wanted to work for an employer who would be understanding and who could make reasonable adjustments to support him in the workplace. He worked with the team and they got to know Ruairdh to find out the type of work environments would meet his needs. He was really keen on working outdoors. The employer services team had a really good relationship with McDonald’s at Fort Kinnaird, they were able to talk to the manager about Ruairidh’s needs. Working together they were able to find a role that would involve working outside, cleaning the patio areas, using the jet washers and taking food orders out to the cars. Even though Ruairidh was enthusiastic about this opportunity he still had a few reservations. He was supported throughout the process and his personal adviser even met him on his first induction day to make sure he felt comfortable and relaxed. His personal adviser Aileen Bertram said: “Ruairidh is driven, enthusiastic and keen to learn. I'm delighted that he has been given an opportunity to prove himself. He is thriving in his new role and welcomes the chance to take on further responsibilities.” Ruairidh is now receiving in-work support from the team as he looks to further his career. He said: “since being a part of Fair Start Scotland the support has been really good from all the team at StartScotland.”
